Tips for wording legacies

The following sample wording can be used if you would like to leave a legacy to Shelter Scotland.

The suggested wording to leave a share of your estate (residuary legacy) is:

'Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the residue of my estate (or part of the residue of my estate) to Shelter Scotland of Scotiabank House, 6 South Charlotte Street, Edinburgh EH2 4AW, (registered charity number in Scotland SCO02327), for the general purposes of Shelter Scotland. I direct that the receipt of the duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge.

The suggested wording to leave a specific sum (pecuniary legacy) is:

'I give free of tax to Shelter Scotland, of Scotiabank House, 6 South Charlotte Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4AW, registered charity number SCO02327, the sum of £________ for the purposes of Shelter Scotland, and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.'

The suggested wording to leave a specific item is:

'I give to Shelter Scotland, of Scotiabank House, 6 South Charlotte Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4AW, registered charity number SCO02327, absolutely (write in here whatever you wish to give) for the purpose of Shelter Scotland, and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.'
