If you rent your home from a council or housing association and wish to move to a new place, there are several options open to you. These include applying for a transfer within your council's area, a move to a new area or a mutual exchange through Homeswapper.

The HOMES Mobility and Homeswap schemes were discontinued in January 2007. Homeswap has been replaced by Homeswapper. The HOMES Mobility Scheme has yet to be replaced.

Transfers

If you want to move to a new home within your council's local area, you can apply for a transfer. If you rent from a housing association, you can ask to be transferred to another property owned by that association. Read more 

Moving to a new area

Until January 2007, if you needed to move to a different council area within the UK, you would have applied to the HOMES Mobility Scheme. However, this scheme has now been discontinued. To find out how to move to a new area, contact your council or housing association. Read more 

Exchanges with Homeswapper

If you rent your home from the council or from a housing association in Scotland, you may be able to swap your home with another council or housing association tenant living somewhere else in Scotland, or in the rest of the UK. Read more
