Shelter believes that everyone should have a good quality, safe and affordable home. There is work to be done to make sure that this becomes the case.
Housing conditions
Many of Scotland’s homes are in desperate need of improvement. Poor quality housing still exists in the public and private sectors and investment is required to bring it up to standard. Over a quarter of a million houses are affected by dampness and condensation and most homes fail to reach recognised standards for energy efficiency.
All social rented sector homes must meet the Scottish Housing Quality Standard by 2015 but many social landlords are concerned about the meeting the cost of this. There is no target for private housing to meet this improved standard.

One of the defining characteristics of a community is its housing. The quality and location of housing as well as local amenities and environmental factors go a long way to determining how successful that community is and the health and well being of the people who live in it.
