Housing charity Shelter Scotland announces new director

Shelter Scotland, the housing and homelessness charity, today (Friday) announced the appointment of its new director.

Graeme Brown, who has a wealth of experience in the field of homelessness, will take the reins of the housing charity in Scotland from Monday, July 21.

Graeme, who is currently Director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns at Shelter in England, has a track record of achievement working with NGOs, local authorities, and government departments, focussing on housing, children and young people, and vulnerable groups.

Speaking about his recent appointment, he said: 'I look forward to leading Shelter Scotland at this critical time for housing and homelessness.'

Denis Robertson Sullivan, chair of the Shelter Scotland Committee, said: 'We are pleased that Shelter Scotland has been able to attract back to Scotland one of our most senior UK managers. Graeme will be a powerful and highly informed advocate for good housing in Scotland.'

  1. Full Biography: Originally from Glasgow, Graeme graduated from the School of Community Studies in Edinburgh. He worked in Strathclyde before a move to London to work with homeless young people at the Soho Project. Following, two years in Canada, where he started a project with aboriginal young people, he returned to London to open the first refuge for children who had run away from home or care. In 1988, he led a campaign that resulted in new provision for homeless young people in the 1989 Children Act. From 1993, he was Director of Public Affairs for the Children’s Society and also undertook a major research study for the Council of Europe of which he is a Research Fellow. In 1999, he worked with M & S where he was programme manager for the Children’s Promise appeal, which raised £25 million for a consortium of charities. From 2000, he worked as an independent consultant on a number of assignments for the Home Office, the Rough Sleepers Unit at the Department of the Environment, the Social Exclusion Unit in the Cabinet Office and a number of NGOs. He has been Director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns at Shelter in England since 2006, where he has been instrumental in raising the charity’s profile with key audiences.
