Response to Debt Action Announcement

13 January 2009

The Scottish Government has announced the creation of the Debt Action Forum, to examine information and initiatives on debt relief, debt advice and repossession and recommend a package of legislative and non-legislative measures to tackle the issues.

Speaking after the announcement of the Debt Action Forum and a sub-group focussing on repossessions, Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, the housing and homelessness charity, said:

"In light of predictions of a significant rise in home repossessions this year, this focus on the issue is much needed. Each repossession is an individual tragedy and anything that can be done to stop families becoming homeless is welcome. While there will be many different matters to look at, ensuring people have access to specialist advice and in-court legal representation is vital."
