Response to publication of Repossessions Working Group report

9 June 2009

Responding to the publication of the Repossessions Working Group report [1], Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, the housing and homelessness charity, said:

'Shelter Scotland has been an active member of the Scottish Government's working group on repossessions and we welcome the publication of this report. These recommendations would extend the protections available to homeowners in Scotland and help keep families in their own homes.

'We now need urgent action to implement the findings of the Working Group report and to prevent the flow of repossessions becoming a tidal wave of homelessness.

'Knowing what your rights are is key to keeping your home. Anyone struggling with the cost of their mortgages or with any other housing problem should go to our advice pages or call our free housing advice line on 0808 800 4444.'

Notes to editors

  1. Read the Repossessions Working Group report.
  2. Repossession figures for Scotland are not currently available. Shelter Scotland continues to call for these to be collected centrally.
