Responding
to the Scottish Government’s announcement of an accelerated £17
million towards affordable housing in Scotland, Graeme Brown,
Director of Shelter Scotland, said:
“Investing in
affordable housing right now is the solution to help house the
thousands of people in Scotland without a home (1) and help keep
the construction industry on its feet.
“We look forward
to seeing the details of how many of these homes will be for rent
(2) and urge the Scottish Government to work towards bringing the
rest of the accelerated funding forward with speed. Scotland’s
housing time bomb is ticking.”
(1) In 2007-08, just over
40,000 households were accepted by their local authority as
homeless or potentially homeless, On 31 March 2008, there were
just over 9,500 households in temporary accommodation across
Scotland. Source: Scottish Government. (2) Shelter Scotland,
along with other housing associations, has long campaigned for
10,000 affordable rented homes a year for Scotland.
