Social housing budget cuts a disaster waiting to happen

19 October 2010

Shelter Scotland today responded to reports in the media that England's social housing budget faces swingeing cuts.

Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, the housing and homelessness charity, said:

“If Scotland has to suffer the same fate as England and take an above average hit to its social housing budget the impact will be disastrous and felt by the most vulnerable in our society for many years to come.

“It is imperative that the Scottish Parliament protects and maintains capital expenditure levels – especially in house-building.  It is the only way of steering Scotland away from economic disaster.

“Without building more new affordable homes, we will face the combustible mix of fewer affordable homes and many, many more people in need of one.

“The Scottish Parliament is not powerless to act.  We need to build more homes, protect and refurbish the ones we have and make housing a real national priority.”
