This section looks at other costs involved when you live in rented accommodation or in your own home, including household bills, maintenance, insurance and living expenses. Unfortunately your rent or mortgage is only the start of it!

Household bills

Unless they are included in your rent, you will need to pay utility bills and council tax. This page explains more.

Maintaining your home

You may have to pay extra charges for services, such as cleaning or gardening. This is particularly likely if you live in a tenement building or block of flats. If you are a home owner, you will also have to pay for repairs and maintenance to your property.

Insurance

This page looks at the different kinds of insurance you need to take out to protect your home and cover you in case anything goes wrong.

Living expenses

Besides bills and insurance, you will also have to include living expenses in your budget. This page lists costs you may need to take into consideration, and also has links to websites with more useful budgeting advice.

Water charges

This page looks at water charges and how you may be able to save money on water by getting a meter installed. It also has tips on saving water in your home.
