Every 15 minutes a household becomes homeless in Scotland because of the housing emergency.
A lost parliament?
Scottish Government housing and homelessness statistics released on 3rd February 2026 were the final release before the Scottish election in May 2026.
Comparing these figures against those at the beginning of the parliament, we can see the scale of the housing emergency and the need for a new approach in the next parliamentary term.
Since September 2021:
rough sleeping has more than doubled, an 111% increase
the number of households assessed as homeless has increased 18%
the number of households in temporary accommodation has increased 27%
the number of children in temporary accommodation has increased 26%
Homeless applications
There were 33,966 households assessed as homeless or threatened with homelessness in the year to September 2025.
This is a 2% reduction from the same period last year, but still means that a household becomes homeless in Scotland every 15 minutes.
