Deposits in private tenancies
Private landlords and letting agents can charge up to 2 months' rent as a deposit.
Usually they must pay it into a deposit protection scheme. The scheme can help decide how much you'll get back if there's a dispute.
If your deposit was not protected when it should have been, you can apply to a tribunal for compensation.
