Housing options if you're not a British or Irish citizen
No matter your nationality or immigration status, you can:
rent privately from a private landlord or letting agent
rent social housing from a housing association
Landlords, letting agents and housing associations cannot ask you to prove your immigration status.
There are immigration conditions for getting housing from the council. If you're not a British or Irish citizen, the council can ask you to prove your immigration status if you want to:
rent a council house
get homeless help, including temporary accommodation
