New MSPs must take action on the housing emergency

Scotland’s new MSPs are now in office.

We are still in the same housing emergency.

Let’s call on them to use their power to fix it.

See how homelessness is affecting your area

Scotland faces record-high levels of homelessness.

Across the country, families are stuck in temporary homeless accommodation and children are growing up without a permanent home. Rents are unaffordable, but fewer social homes are being built every year.

Supported by our corporate partner IKEA, we have created an interactive map of homelessness in Scotland, to show the scale of the problem.

Click on the buttons below to see 3 maps showing local authority data, including the percentage change since last year, for:

  • the total number of households who are homeless

  • the number of households in temporary accommodation (TA)

  • the number of children in temporary accommodation (TA)

Local authority maps showing data for households in temporary accommodation, children in temporary accommodation, and households applying as homeless, to September 2025 for all Scottish local authorities

Tell your new MSPs to act on the housing emergency

Our new MSPs need to understand exactly what this emergency looks like in their area, and they need to hear it directly from the people who live there.

It's time to show newly elected MSPs the reality of the housing emergency locally.

Together, we can make sure Scotland’s new MSPs hear this message loud and clear: build more social homes, end the housing emergency.

IKEA and Shelter Scotland have a long-term partnership to deliver meaningful change to address the housing emergency in Scotland, calling on the Scottish Government to invest in enough social housing to reduce housing need over the course of the next parliamentary term. Because we share the belief that home is everything.
