Collector conduct policy

Fundraising collections are a great way of raising money for our vital work, and we simply could not do this without the support of volunteers.

Our guidelines will help make sure we're fulfilling our obligations as a registered charity, so we can continue to raise and collect money in this way.

Collector conduct

  • please remember that as you're using the Shelter Scotland brand, the general public will associate you with our cause, and therefore your conduct (i.e. behaviour and language) will also reflect on us

  • please do not smoke or drink alcohol while wearing or using Shelter Scotland branded clothing or equipment

  • make sure there is always an adult (over 18) present at the collection

  • it’s great to encourage people to support, but please do not shake buckets to get someone’s attention

  • please do not approach anyone; allow people to come to you

  • make sure you're wearing appropriate clothing for the location, date and time of your collection

  • check our cash handling guidelines

Please direct people to Shelter Scotland's website if they:

  • make an enquiry about housing advice or any of our services

  • wish to donate by other means

  • have had a previous issue with Shelter Scotland and wish to make a complaint

  • ask you any other questions that you do not feel comfortable answering

If you're approached by someone who is homeless or needs Shelter Scotland's support, explain that you're not qualified to give advice and direct them to our online housing advice or our helpline.

Your safety is our number one priority. In the unlikely event that someone behaves in a confrontational way, do not engage, find a safe space, and report any incident to the community fundraising team.
