Michelle's fight for a place to call home for her family
Michelle and her 3 daughters experienced the unthinkable. The private rented accommodation they lived in was repossessed by the mortgage lender with all their possessions. Michelle and her daughters lost everything – the children's toys, clothes and personal possessions.
They were left with nowhere to go. Homeless. Michelle contacted her local council, who moved them into a hotel room where they spent 3 weeks. Then Michelle and her daughters moved into temporary accommodation. They have been stuck there for 2 years and counting. Temporary accommodation is not a home, and in many cases, it is not temporary.
'Without Shelter Scotland, I'm not sure how I’d have managed my situation.'
Michelle contacted Shelter Scotland for assistance. One of our solicitors gave her legal advice so that she fully understood her rights. She also had an opportunity to share her experiences as part of Shelter Scotland's lived experience panel, explaining how neurodiversity can make facing the housing emergency even harder.
A gift from you today could help us be there for people who need our help the most. With your support, Shelter Scotland could provide advice and practical support to families like Michelle's experiencing homelessness.
