A few years ago, Caroline and her two children experienced a terrifying break-in. It left their home unsafe, with broken ground-floor windows and no sense of security.
Caroline was injured while trying to protect her home. But her landlord refused to carry out repairs and blamed her for the break-in. The council said they couldn't intervene, leaving Caroline's family trapped – paying rent for a property that couldn't keep out the cold or the fear.
Caroline's son, who is autistic and has ADHD, became overwhelmed with distress. When he ran from the house in fear, she knew enough was enough. But the council warned that if she didn't renew her lease, they'd consider her intentionally homeless.
We worked alongside Caroline to challenge the council to uphold her housing rights. Together, we got the council to provide temporary accommodation. Then, we stood with Caroline as she fought to get her family the permanent, safe home they deserved.
And today, Caroline and her children are safe in a secure social home where they can finally heal.
No child should have to live in fear in their own home
In 2024/25, over 15,000 children were in households assessed as homeless or threatened with homelessness. That’s the equivalent of 41 children becoming homeless every day in Scotland.
This isn't right. Every child deserves a safe, permanent home where they can grow, learn and thrive.
