64,000 reasons to say thank you

When our Gran Squad set out last year to tell politicians that Scotland urgently needs more social homes, they weren't going to let them off the hook.

Thanks to supporters like you, their voices were impossible to ignore.

Your impact

Together, you helped send over 64,000 emails to election candidates and party leaders across Scotland, calling for urgent action to end the housing emergency. It was a powerful show of support for a message to our leaders: Scotland needs more social homes, and we need them now.

Early in our campaign, there was a huge step forward. One that belongs to everyone who took action and refused to stay quiet about the housing emergency. The Scottish Government announced plans for More Homes Scotland, a new national housing agency, meeting one of our core campaign asks.

More Homes Scotland has the potential to make a real difference and could help tackle some of the biggest barriers to building social homes, from land and planning to infrastructure and investment.

But we're not taking our foot off the pedal. 125,000 households across Scotland are currently waiting for a social home. For every year we fail to build enough social homes, more people are pushed into homelessness.

Shelter Scotland campaigners holding a letter to the First Minister. The opening line reads 'On behalf of the 10,480 children trapped in temporary accommodation.'

That's why we're keeping up the pressure through Building Hope, our joint project with Fife Gingerbread, calling for an end to child homelessness. In August, families with experience of homelessness came together to sign and deliver an open letter to the First Minister, John Swinney, calling for urgent action to end child homelessness.

Their message was heard. The Scottish Government's Programme for Government included a commitment from John Swinney to end the use of unsafe and harmful temporary accommodation for children.

Now, we need to make sure that promise becomes action. Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can keep the pressure on for more social homes to be built and bring an end to Scotland's housing emergency.
