Faye's story

After watching a TV programme about homelessness in Scotland, Faye was determined to do something to help. She said:

'I felt really upset because of how [people] have gone through that and that I have a lovely house and they don't have that. So I told my parents I want to do something to help.'

Faye chose a challenge that would really test her.

'I have chosen to climb a Munro (985m) because I don't climb hills that often and it will be hard. I will have to train for this,' she said.

Over the following weeks, Faye and her family trained together, taking on increasingly difficult hills to prepare for the big day. On challenge day, they set off in beautiful but very warm weather.

'She found it really tough at times, especially the heat, but I never felt she would give up - she was so determined,' said Alun, Faye's dad.

Faye, her mum and her dog are walking up the path to climb the Munro. Fay is wearing a Shelter Scotland 'Home is everything' T-shirt.

Faye's mum remembers how she tackled the trickier parts: 'There were a couple of steep sections which she managed by holding on to her dad's hand tightly. It took her about 7 hours in the end so it was a gruelling event!'

But Faye made it to the summit, and her huge achievement came with an amazing fundraising total too: £875 for Shelter Scotland, helping to fuel the fight for home.

'I used to hate climbing hills but now I love it. I feel proud of myself!' Faye said.

The experience gave Faye more than just a great view from the summit.

'It's been a great way to support a good cause, but it’s also got Faye curious about how there is inequality in the world. Her school recognised her achievement, and friends shared stories about experiencing homelessness that we had no idea about.'

After conquering her first Munro, Faye is already looking ahead: 'I'd like to do a challenge every year now.'
