Little act,
big impact

Last year more people than ever came to us for help. 50 years on we’re still fighting until there’s a home for everyone. We recognise that not everybody has the time to volunteer, or the money to make a regular donation, but there are other ways to join the fight.

If you decide to do any of these activities, share it on social media using #littleactbigimpact to encourage others to make a big impact for people affected by bad housing or homelessness today.

Please note that these are ideas only and we are not asking you to do any of these activities on behalf of, or as a representative of, Shelter Scotland. You should ensure that you feel completely comfortable before doing anything, and be mindful of your own safety and that of others. If you are organising events, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are satisfying all relevant legal requirements and that you have appropriate insurance cover.

Click through the sections below to reveal what you could do:

  • Read up on your housing rights, and share this information with anybody who is experiencing housing issues or homelessness. Here are some useful links: Renting rights | What is homelessness?
  • Add our ‘contact us’ page to the website favourites on your smart phone. This will allow you to quickly access our online chat service to get more information about housing issues or homelessness.
  • Save our helpline number in your phone and give it to anybody you chat to who is experiencing urgent housing issues or homelessness - 0808 800 4444
  • Download and print our ‘Housing Help’ cards and give them to people who need some advice about their housing situation.
  • If you see someone sleeping rough, smile at them or stop for a chat if you feel comfortable and safe doing so. You can also check local arrangements for them to present as homeless to the local council.
  • Use your social media accounts to express your concern about our current housing crisis. Consider following us and sharing our posts – we have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
  • Take 50 minutes to clear out your wardrobe, and donate unwanted clothes or household goods to your local Shelter Scotland shop. Find out where your local shop is.
  • Find out what it is like to volunteer in one of our shops. Visit your local Shelter Scotland shop and ask to take part in a 50 minute volunteering taster session!
  • For more information about how we are still fighting to ensure everyone has a home, and for other ways to get involved, sign up as a Shelter Scotland supporter. It only takes 50 seconds!
