Little act,
big impact

We're fighting for a Scotland where everyone has a place to feel safe. Where no one chooses between food and rent, and no one sleeps on the streets. We all have the right to a good home and we want to make it the law. Are you with us?

We recognise that not everybody has the time to regularly volunteer, or the money to make a regular donation, but there are many other ways to join the fight.

If you decide to do any of these activities, share it on social media using #littleactbigimpact and #areyouwithus to encourage others to make a big impact for people affected by bad housing or homelessness today.

Please note that these are ideas only and we are not asking you to do any of these activities on behalf of, or as a representative of, Shelter Scotland. You should ensure that you feel completely comfortable before doing anything, and be mindful of your own safety and that of others. If you are organising events, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are satisfying all relevant legal requirements and that you have appropriate insurance cover.

Individuals
  • Do you know your housing rights? Would you know how to help your friends or family? Find out more
  • Add our ‘contact us’ page to the website favourites on your smart phone. This will allow you to quickly access our online chat service or call our helpline to get more information about housing issues or homelessness for yourself, or to easily give it to anyone in need of housing advice.
  • If you see someone sleeping rough, smile at them or stop for a chat if you feel comfortable and safe doing so or check out this page for what else you can do.
  • Use your voice - tell people about our current housing emergency. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share some facts and statistics on homelessness and bad housing. Or why not write an article on housing issues for your school, university, work or community newsletter – information on our latest campaign will help with that.
  • Sign our petition to make sure there's a home for everyone by showing public support for stronger housing rights.
  • Not all our volunteer roles require a regular commitment - you can sign up to be community volunteer and give as much - or as little - time as you like.
  • Clear out your wardrobe, and donate unwanted clothes or household goods to your local Shelter Scotland shop. Find out where your local shop is.
  • Find out what it is like to volunteer in one of our shops.
  • A fundraising event is a simple but effective way to help families and individuals get back on their feet - and stay in homes they love. You can sign up to participate in local community fundraising activities and learn more about how you can help within your community here: Community Scotland.
  • Now you've done your little act - why not encourage your friends, family or colleagues to do the same?
