How to plan a successful fundraising event

Get ideas, tips and resources to create your successful fundraising event.

Planning your event

Set a date

Is your event on a weekday evening, a weekend or during school holidays? Make sure your date does not clash with any important occasions.

Get help from your friends

Don’t try to do everything yourself. Ask your friends, family, and colleagues to help you organise and spread the word. Make a list of tasks and decide who’s doing what.

Name the place

If you need a venue, try to book it well in advance. Make sure it's accessible and has a place to make drinks. Check if you need a licence to hold an event there.

Advertise locally

Put up posters in your local community posters to advertise your event.

See our fundraising resources.

Safety first

Make sure you have a first aid kit. If you’re selling or providing food and drink, check for potential allergens so you can alert people.

Use Etsy and eBay

If you're selling to fundraise, try selling on eBay or setting up an Etsy shop. It's fast, easy, and effective.

Social media

There are so many ways to get people to notice your fundraising event.

Set up a WhatsApp or Facebook group, get on TikTok and don’t forget Instagram. Get people to post updates, photos, and videos, and remember to tag Shelter Scotland.

JustGiving

Create a JustGiving page. Write your story and tell people why you think fighting for home is important. Set a target, and don’t be afraid to increase it to get more donations. Post regular updates and share them on social media and by email.

Gift Aid

If people who donate to you are UK taxpayers, ask them to sign up for Gift Aid.

This means we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you raise, so more money from your donations at no extra cost to you.

How to pay in your fundraising money
