How people who rent can make renting fit and fair for all

An event for people who rent privately-this means if you rent from a landlord or a letting agent. Lots of chats, a photobooth, some food and some learning. Find out what the new tenancy law means to you, and how you can get to know your rights as a renter.

Renting, venting, change: How people who rent can make renting fit and fair for all.

Throughout the day a surgery will be open with an adviser present to deal with any issues.

10-11am Registration and networking

11.00-11.15 Welcome/intro
The welcome to be given by Gerry Kielty, a member of Shelter Scotland's Private Tenant Panel and Ellie Hutchinson, Project Manager.

11.15-11.45 Interview 
Hear Rebecca Chan from Living Rent and Private Tenant Panel member Duncan Thorp to hear about their experiences of renting and making change.

12.00-12.15 Elevator pitch for workshops - presenters will give a two minute introduction to their workshop.  

  • Housing co-ops - Leo Hamilton
    In this session, Glasgow Student Housing Co-operative will present on what it means to be a co-operative, and what their journey has been so far.  Discussion for the workshop will be looking for alternatives to the high street. Do you know about alternatives? What would be useful for you? This will be a learning and discussion opportunity.
  • Changes in the private rented sector; what you need to know - Natasha Miller.  
    In this session, participants will have the chance to find out more about the new tenancy and what it means for them.  This will be a learning workshop.
  • Solutions - venting and renting.
    In this session, participants will work through some of the problems posted on the 'vent wall' - each table will have a Shelter Scotland staff member to chat through ideas, barriers and solutions.  This will be a discussion session.

2.10-2.50 Rebecca Chan from living rent will look at developing a campaign - pick a problem and look at how we might change it

2.50-3.15 Zakia Moulaoui, from Social Bite and Invisible cities will close the day reflecting on community and connections
