The European courts

This page outlines the jurisdiction of the European courts.

There are two European Courts: the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Their rulings overrule those of the UK Supreme Court. The European Court of Justice mostly deals with matters concerning interpretation of European Union legislation and has ruled against the UK on sex equality issues. The European Court of Human Rights deals with human rights issues and has ruled against the UK in a number of cases.
